Not entirely surprising. Back when I was in the public schools a bit, I noticed that middle school kids were being taught time-management techniques. They all had calendars and tasks lists and such. At first I thought it was good that the school was teaching the kids some useful techniques for managing time in the real world. Then I thought why on earth should kids be walking around with task lists? And don’t even get me started on standardized tests as a method for “accountability.”

The teevee shows are what boggle me. They’re all frought with teenage angst, but on a soap-opera scale. I think we’re beginning to see youth culture feedback on itself. Catcher in the Rye seems kinda tame compared to the stuff I’ve seen recently, although it’s not hard to imagine Holden with a myspace page and dissing all da fakers. He would definitely rap.
